So entstand der Wunsch nach einer zusammenfassenden Darstellung der wichtigsten Methoden fUr die statistische Zuverlassigkeitsanalyse und die Auswertung von Lebensdaueruntersuchungen. Diesem Wunsch versuche ich mit dem vorliegenden Buch zu entsprechen. Zuerst muBte ich aus der Vielzahl der Konzepte und Methoden jene auswahlen, die bereits angewandt werden oder sich dafUr eignen. Was sich schlieBlich durchsetzt, hangt ja nicht nur von den theoretischen Eigenschaften eines speziellen Verfahrens ab, sondern von vielen weiteren Gesichtspunkten, wie Einfachheit und Durchsichtigkeit der heuristi schen Motivation. Ob die in diesem Sinne getroffene Auswahl gut ist, wird die kiinftige Anwendung zeigen. Ein diesbeziiglicher wichtiger Komplex wurde nicht behandelt: die belastungsabhangigen Modelle. Sie hatten den Rahmen des Buches stark erweitert. AuBerdem befindet sich die damit verbundene Methodik gegenwartig in einer so stiirmi schen Entwicklung, daB in den nachsten zwei bis drei Jahren mit entscheidenden Bei tragen zu rechnen ist, die erst spater in einem Buch aufgenommen werden konnen.
