Download Brain Storms books, A Top 10 Science Book of Fall 2015 - Publishers Weekly A star science journalist with Parkinson's reveals the inner workings of this perplexing disease Seven million people worldwide suffer from Parkinson's, and doctors, researchers, and patients continue to hunt for a cure. In Brain Storms, the award-winning journalist Jon Palfreman tells their story, a story that became his own when he was diagnosed with the debilitating illness. Palfreman chronicles how scientists have worked to crack the mystery of what was once called the shaking palsy, from the earliest clinical descriptions of tremors, gait freezing, and micrographia to the cutting edge of neuroscience, and charts the victories and setbacks of a massive international effort to best the disease. He takes us back to the late 1950s and the discovery of L-dopa. He delves into a number of other therapeutic approaches to this perplexing condition, from partial lobotomies and deep brain stimulation to neural grafting. And he shares inspiring stories of brave individuals living with Parkinson's, from a former professional ballet dancer who tricks her body to move freely again to a patient who cannot walk but astounds doctors when he is able to ride a bicycle with no trouble at all. With the baby boom generation beginning to retire and the population steadily aging, the race is on to discover a means to stop or reverse neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Brain Storms is the long-overdue, riveting, and deeply personal story of that race, and a passionate, insightful, and urgent look into the lives of those affected.

by Rebecca M. Jordan-Young, Brain Storm Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Brain Storm books, Jordan-Young has written a stunning book that demolishes most of the science associated with the dominant paradigm of the development of sex and gender identity, behavior, and orientation. The current paradigm, brain organization theory, proposes: "Because of early exposure to different sex hormones, males and females have different brains"; and these hormones also create "gay" and "straight" brains. Jordan-Young interviewed virtually every major researcher in the field and reviewed hundreds of published scientific papers. Her conclusion: "Brain organization theory is little more than an elaboration of longstanding folk tales about antagonistic male and female essences and how they connect to antagonistic male and female natures." She explains, in exquisite detail, the flaws in the underlying science, from experimental designs that make no statistical sense to "conceptually sloppy" definitions of male and female sexuality, contradictory results, and the social construction of normality. Her conclusion that the patterns we see are far more complicated than previously believed and due to a wider range of variables will shake up the research community and alter public perception.

Brain Storm Optimization Algorithms PDF Full

by Shi Cheng, Brain Storm Optimization Algorithms Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Brain Storm Optimization Algorithms books, Brain Storm Optimization (BSO) algorithms are a new kind of swarm intelligence method, which is based on the collective behavior of human beings, i.e., on the brainstorming process. Since the introduction of BSO algorithms in 2011, many studies on them have been conducted. They not only offer an optimization method, but could also be viewed as a framework of optimization techniques. The process employed in the algorithms could be simplified as a framework with two basic operations: the converging operation and the diverging operation. A “good enough” optimum could be obtained through recursive solution divergence and convergence. The resulting optimization algorithm would naturally have the capability of both convergence and divergence. This book is primarily intended for researchers, engineers, and graduate students with an interest in BSO algorithms and their applications. The chapters cover various aspects of BSO algorithms, and collectively provide broad insights into what these algorithms have to offer. The book is ideally suited as a graduate-level textbook, whereby students may be tasked with the study of the rich variants of BSO algorithms that involves a hands-on implementation to demonstrate the utility and applicability of BSO algorithms in solving optimization problems.

by David K. Brown, Brain Storm When The Mind Becomes The Utimate Weapon Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Brain Storm When The Mind Becomes The Utimate Weapon books, Daniel Jefferies was always happy even though he led a challenging life. It was not so much that Danny was bothered by his troubles, rather life was hard on those who loved and cared about him. At a very young age it became clear that Danny was a special person. Whether that was special in a good way or special in a bad way was in the eye of the beholder. Danny was neither a square or round peg so he never fit into the spaces that were laid out for him. The only thing for sure was that Daniel Jefferies had an unmistakable effect on everyone around him. And since Danny was a happy person it made sense that he would make those around him feel better. But all that changed one day when researchers believed that they could harness his gift. In doing so they unwittingly unleashed Daniel Jefferies to become something that was not meant to be unleashed. Brain-Storm is a story so real that you wonder when, not if it is going to happen!

by Jennifer Bloom, Brainstorms Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Brainstorms books, In Brainstorms, Jennifer Bloom invites us to connect with stories, relationships, and the natural world that is often hidden behind the faade of suburbia. At times metaphysical, quirky, and emotionally raw, the poetry in this collection is an exploration of what it means to be human and the moments that can transcend the ordinary. The themes are familiar love lost and found, lifes ups and downs, beginnings and endings. But no rose is ever identical. Blooms poetic gift lies in her ability to evoke whats familiar and shared by way of tiny, almost imperceptible gestures and the powerful, sometimes painful, intimacies of everyday life. Her work evokes the layers and textures of Mary Oliver and Joni Mitchell. Its color is, finally, a defiant and joyous yellow, its music the first sounds of spring. - George Gonzalez, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Religion and Interdisicplinary Studies, Monmouth University Bloom has a way of bringing beauty to the mundane, eliciting an intimacy with her readers through shared experience. Recognizing the sacred in the everyday, her poetry invites us to linger over what we might otherwise ignore. A sleeping child, a quiet house, a butterfly in flight... these are the moments she elevates to the remarkable. A must-read for those desiring to transform their relationship with the world. - Jennifer Hritz, Author, The Crossing and I, too, Have Suffered in the Garden Cover Art: Hector Kriete Photo: Diana Berrent Photography Experience more at Jennifer-Bloom.com

Brainstorms Fortieth Anniversary Edition PDF Full

by Daniel C. Dennett, Brainstorms Fortieth Anniversary Edition Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Brainstorms Fortieth Anniversary Edition books, An anniversary edition of a classic in cognitive science, with a new introduction by the author. When Brainstorms was published in 1978, the interdisciplinary field of cognitive science was just emerging. Daniel Dennett was a young scholar who wanted to get philosophers out of their armchairs—and into conversations with psychologists, linguists, computer scientists. This collection of seventeen essays by Dennett offers a comprehensive theory of mind, encompassing traditional issues of consciousness and free will. Using careful arguments and ingenious thought experiments, the author exposes familiar preconceptions and hobbling intuitions. The essays are grouped into four sections: “Intentional Explanation and Attributions of Mentality”; “The Nature of Theory in Psychology”; “Objects of Consciousness and the Nature of Experience”; and “Free Will and Personhood.” This anniversary edition includes a new introduction by Dennett, “Reflections on Brainstorms after Forty Years,” in which he recalls the book's original publication by Harry and Betty Stanton of Bradford Books and considers the influence and afterlife of some of the essays. For example, “Mechanism and Responsibility” was Dennett's first articulation of his concept of the intentional stance; “Are Dreams Experiences?” anticipates the major ideas in his 1991 book Consciousness Explained; and “Where Am I?” has been variously represented in a BBC documentary, a student's Javanese shadow puppet play, and a feature-length film made in the Netherlands, Victim of the Brain.
